It affects the number of passed balls a catcher allows. But, it is only like, at worst, 20 passed balls instead of 5 or so. That is extremely marginal over the course of a season. Long story short, don't worry about a catcher's fielding too much. Worry about their arm.

I think fielding should be important to a catcher since they need to field bad pitches behind the plate. However, according to the manual fielding and range are not that important for catchers. So most of us just look for a guy with a strong arm and low defensive ratings.

...and fielding of bunts, but those aren't terribly common events.

[ID #92392] I am training this guy to be my catcher of the future specifically because his low defense will boost all his hitting numbers. His arm is decent but his offense will compensate nicely
