@brentswagger is right - fielding is much more important in this game at 2B and SS (and 3B to a lesser extent) than anywhere else in this game. The most important attributes defensively for OF are Range first, then Arm, then Fielding a distant third. Ideally you want 16+ Range in the MI spots, same in Fielding, and (again ideally) a 16+ Arm at SS. Arm is not important for 2B, however.

Your minors look like they will remedy this in due course. Kelly looks like a stud SS and leadoff man, and Knight would make a nice 2B complement until Wells is ready. I'd train Hodson in the OF instead of C (a 16+ Arm is needed at C, though if he has success throwing out base runners with a 15 Arm then roll with it), and I'd train Mullen at 3B - his Fielding and Arm are high for the hot corner but won't be wasted, and he doesn't have the Range for anywhere else. Russell has the Arm for C. Further down Jorgensen would make a good 3B also.

Oh, and get a new manager. You have an old one with no report, so his abilities are all 10s and will stay that way. There are a number of threads/posts on how to find the newer managers in the Help forum, so take a look around and you'll get some good advice there.

Thanks for the input. All of those are interesting points. My middle infield will be VERY good for years to come with Esparza (just called up) and Kelly like you mentioned. They're both fantastic in range and arm, so it's just a waiting game now waiting for their fielding attribute to develop.

I'm still struggling with where to play my current major leaguers though. I feel like I have a lot of talents and a lot of options, but it doesnt seem to be coming fully together on the field.

I'd make a lot of changes. I was going to give two answers - an optimal lineup and one for the future (to train prospects correctly) but to be honest I couldn't think of a proper lineup for now. Here's what I'd do:

Hutchinson 1B
Wyatt 2B
Bond/Mason (vs lhp/rhp - look at career stats) CF
Greene RF
Rocha 3B
Leon C
Ruelas 3B
Esparza SS
Edwards DH

Really not a fan of your current defensive alignments and some of your guys are just not hitting enough to warrant playing time which is why I think you need to play your young guns.

Thanks for the input. Here's another question for you, what's the lowest batting average you would allow for a top defender before you sacrifice defense for a better bat, and vice versa. I know this varies team be team, but im sure theres a generic range you might consider.

My general cut off is below .200 average no matter what, or under .220 if they don't have a good OB% or SLG.

I think you have to preface it by what position you're talking about and how far the defense falls.

In most cases, a righty with good defense and very good hitting is my preference for position changing to SS. I like to aim for guys with a 15-17 hit cap or 18-20 hit cap and 14/14 range/arm and allow their defense to get to that point. Even if that guy hits for a .700 ops, he should in general make up for it by botching fewer plays. A player that starts at SS and has an 8 in range and 14 in arm probably has 0 chance to play at SS and gets switched to Catcher. a guy that is drafted SS with a poor fielding comment but has 12+ range and arm is likely to move to the OF. so i think thats how you get out of situations where your best bat is at SS providing you with a poor defensive skill-set.

Like you already stated, I don't think there is a definite answer to this. I try to favor younger guys, but to an extent. I look at the possible replacement, and how much I think they can improve the lineup. If it's a considerable amount (say they can hit .300 vs .200 or add 15 hr) than how much are you losing defensively? In this case, I'd take the offense but this is an extreme.

This is a young SS that I have playing full time for me. Defensively he looks great, and his offensive skills fall into the right categories to make him be a useful player. But when you look at his stats so far, it's nothing sexy. .250/.310/.384 tells me he has decent patience and virtually no power as of now. But he's only 26 and I believe he can improve all those numbers to make himself a useful player. If this was a 32 year old SS I was trotting out there putting these numbers, I'd probably bench him.

So I'd say age, potential, current stats vs what you believe their future stats will be, are all important factors. Notice how I seperated the stats vs potential though, as they are two different things. It's easy to fall in love with a player's skills as he may seem like a superstar, but he may never actually perform....

All of this makes sense, thanks for the input everyone. I feel like my team is talented, they just seem to always be underperforming and I can't quite figure out well.

As I continue to assess my team and make big changes, does anyone have any recommendations on my pitching staff and who should be pitching in what role? I feel like the pitching performances have been a crapshoot as well.

I’ve only been at this for about two weeks, so I’ll offer a salt shaker to go along with this. Just a grain might not be enough.

In a 5-man rotation, I would be starting Barrios, Scott, Rasmussen, Rasmussen, and either Deng or Griffith, with whichever of the latter two wasn’t starting going into long relief. Anthony would be my middle reliever and Frank my spot starter. I’d probably use Morgan for setup and close with Orozco. Douglas and Arroyo would most likely be in specialist roles. I might juggle the roles of Frank, Douglas, and Anthony, though, given their performances so far.

…At least, that’s how I’d handle things for this season.

I would advise being on the lookout for some fresh talent for the pitching staff, since the 30-and-up guys are starting to show their age and I’m not particularly enthusiastic about any of your minor league pitchers (though Nash could possibly wind up being an effective setup guy or closer once he’s ready to hit the Majors).
