Hey everyone. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I have just started to train this 19 year old minors player at the Catcher position.

Any thoughts on how long it will take to train him to full C status?

I've heard that fielding rating is not that important for Cs and that the arm rating is more important, is that true?

Thanks for any comments! :-)

( Oh my! I forgot to add a title to this post . . . whoops! )

He's a lefty. I would probably just aim towards the outfield with him. He'd have a full OF by the time he made it to the majors.

Thanks, yeah the lefty throwing concerned me as well. Did not know if this game was like the real MLB on lefty catcher throwinng. You rarely ever see a lefty throwing catcher in MLB. :-)

I'm actually trying this already. I landed Moran in the 10th round in 2026: no speed or fielding and below average range, which means he's going to be a pretty darned good hitter with a 19 Arm. Yes he's a lefty but he'd probably be a liability defensively at 1B, which would mean DH only, so I thought what the hell. If the penatly for a lefty C is that bad then he can still 1B/DH, but its nice to have the option - especially if the penalty turns out to be less severe.

Yep. There is a defensive penalty for playing a lefty at C, 3B, SS, or 2B. If you put a lefty in a lineup at that position you will see a small red x signifying the penalty. There is also a small penalty for playing a righty at 1B, but no red x is shown (plus defense isn't as important at 1B anyhow).

Also, left handed hitters do better against right handed pitchers, and visa versa. Since there are more right handed pitchers than lefties, left handed hitters are usually desirable. For the same reason, left handed pitchers are less desirable except as left handed setup specialists (LHS). Pitchers and hitters have a hidden trait for splits. So some lefty pitchers do ok against righties, while others need to be LHS or bust. Some right handed hitters can hit righties fine, while others are better off platooning.

Performance (including splits) is the most important thing, so you'll find a way to use good players regardless of handedness.

I don't think Moran would be a liability at 1B. People overrate fielding at 1B. With 19 arm he might still work out ok at Catcher; an interesting experiment. I'd also be fine putting him in RF myself.

I currently have a lefty Catcher that has 19 arm and IMO so far it's been ok just wish he could hit some homeruns

i know the range is wasted but i just wanted to try out lefty to see how bad the penalty would be plus i already am loaded with OFs

Thanks for all of the thoughts and information!

I will now most likely train him as an OF. I do not want the lefty penalty.

I forgot that the C position also had the lefty penalty. Thanks everyone!

Landers has ok range at 14 so I think he may be ok in the OF if his fielding number continues to develop.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! :-)

HoHoTDoG, yes your lefty catcher seems to be doing great on D. He had a .996 fielding percentage last season with 145 games at C. He seems to throw out a good percentage of would be base stealers as well.

Interesting . . . That makes me think about developing both a Lefty and a Righty at C - just to learn. :-)
