As we enter the second half of the draft there will be fewer obvious (very good potential) picks available. So I thought I would write a newbie guide for drafting for position. For the purposes of this guide, righty/lefty refers to fielding/pitching only.

First thing to consider is age. If the guy is already in the position you envision him in, then age is meaningless. However, if you will have to train him from scratch you will want to focus on guys who are 21 or younger. It can take 4-6 seasons to get a guy proficient in a position he doesn't already know.

Your hints to their optimal position will be in the scouting report. Fielding is obvious. Speed provides a hint to Range. Range is always 6 SI within Speed, so faster guys are usually rangier.

C
Optimal build: Low fielding, Low speed, righty
Hope for a high arm. Otherwise he is probably a LF/DH

1B
Optimal build: Low fielding, Low speed, lefty
You can have righties here, but there is a slight bonus to a lefty playing in the field.

2B
Optimal build: High fielding, High speed, righty
This is a the perfect defensive build to draft for. If he turns out to have a good arm, he is probably a better SS. If he happens to have lower range and a good arm, then he can play 3B. Just hope he doesn't have high fielding and no range or arm (which is the most useless build).

SS
Optimal build: High fielding, High speed, righty
Hope for high arm, otherwise he may be relegated to 2B

3B
Optimal build: High fielding, Low speed, righty
3B is the most difficult position to draft for. Having some range at 3B is good, but if he is wasting to much SI in speed, he is less likely to have the other skills you need (like Arm).

CF
Optimal build: Low fielding, High speed
Its debatable how much fielding is beneficial in CF, but I usually try not to have more than average fielding in the OF. Range is very important for CF, so the high speed is critical.

LF/RF
Optimal build: Low Fielding, High speed
Range is slightly less important than in CF. The lower the fielding the better. If the guy happens to have a good arm its better to play him in RF.

Build to avoid: High Fielding, lefty
Lefty positions (OF/1B/DH) don't require fielding.

Build to be cautious with: High Fielding, Low speed
This is exactly what you want for 3B, but if he happens to have low arm, he could have the worst possible build (high fielding, low range, low arm). If you don't need 3B, you may want to avoid.

SP
Optimal build: stamina to be a starting pitcher, No control report, righty
You also want them to have a positive report on Velocity or Movement. Below Average control is probably fine for SPs, but I would avoid Wild pitchers in general. On average a righty will perform better than a lefty. But if the lefty has the better report, they may be the better pitcher.

RP
Optimal build: limited to only a few innings, no Control report
I would avoid anyone with a negative control report of RPs. Control is more critical the deeper into your bullpen you go. Again you want to have a positive report on Velocity or Movement. You will want to have at least one lefty specialist in your bullpen, but consider you current minors makeup for arm preferences.

Build to avoid: anything with a negative Control report

Build to be cautious with: can throw all day
These guys will have a lot of SI tied up in stamina. If they have high POT, its not a problem. If they have good Velocity and Movement reports it could be an indication of high POT.

Build to be cautious with: nothing
Guys who have no report, or just a stamina report will likely have high CoS and Control. That isn't necessarily bad. Just be aware they are probably a one trick pony. If they "can throw all day" and have no other report, I would avoid them entirely.

The only thing that can be debated too much i think is the below average control comment and whether one should consider their options there. While ideally you don't draft iffy control to start, there are pitchers who could get to 9-10 control with that comment and also have 2-3 16+ rated pitching attributes. It's probably better to lack CoS (only have 8-10 of that) than it is to have only 8-10 control, but as people get later in the drafts i think it's ok not to 'avoid'. simply 'beware'.
