So, in the most recent spring training sim, my LH specialist (set in management with a diamond and a hook of 1) came in and threw 28 pitches in one-plus inning of work, allows two hits + two walks and a run. I noticed his pitching line in the box score and thought it was strange...the 28 pitches definitely jumped out at me. I checked in on every batter he faced. He faced 7 batters and only the very first one was left handed. Six righties followed. Soooo...what's going on here?

*note - he was only my 3rd pitcher to enter the game. He came in in the 6th inning. My team was leading 3-1 and I had PLENTY of relievers available...including two LR, two MR, one RHSU, another LHSU, one SU, one CL.

This isn't the first time I've seen management completely jack up in game. I guess my question is, are situations like this supposed to be a part of the game (i.e. Your manager has a rating of 5 handling pitchers so the computer purposely has him make some questionable decisions every once in a while)? Or, is this a problem that needs to be addressed?

Its possible that the specialist setting is ignored for spring training...

Which game?

What was the fatigue level of the other players in your bullpen??

That's the box score. The pitcher of interest is Hank Murphay. Looking at the games that preceded this one, I'd say fatigue was minimal.

I just picked up his brother Louis Murphay off waivers. Their dream of playing together will have to wait at least another year!

And actually, now that I look at it again, Weaver is also a LHSU and set with a diamond and hook of 1. He went two innings in this one. Abe (RHSU with pitch count set at 15) and Song (SU with pitch count set at 20) were passed up before my closer came in for the 9th. Both MR and LR were available as well.

Since I have you here, I'd be interested in a more detailed description about how fatigue limit under management settings works. At what point does a + or - keep a pitcher from being brought into a game?

Also, I had an instance last season where my LR was getting used pretty heavily, and in situations that didn't seem like a place to be bringing in the long reliever. My LR was absolutely blasted in one game (he gave up 10 runs and threw over a hundred pitches, both well over his pitch count and hook) and he was brought in in a fairly close game. I think the final ended up being 13-2 and he was never taken out. I posted on that instance as well, and could try to find my post if you're interested.

You didn't have him set as the RHS did you? He stayed in for three righties and then came out the first lefty he faced.

Most of your pitchers were tired, but Abe (the RHS) should have come in. Unless he was set as LHS...?

No, I didn't have him set as RHS. Nor did I have Abe set as LHS. I set my pitching roles prior to spring training and have not touched them since.

Also, I'm very curious how you know my pitchers were tired... where does that comment come from? Is there some way to see their endurance/fatigue in a box score that I've been missing? I doubt any of them were very fatigued. This was the 5th game of spring training. Here are my relief pitchers' pitch counts in the 4 games leading up to this one:

Game 1 - RHS Abe 16, LHS Murphay 5, SU Song 6
Game 2 - MR Werner 13, RHS Rogers 17, LHS Murphay 8, SU Song 3, CL Wheeler 9
Game 3 - LR Guzman 51, MR Krause 14, LR Prieto 78
Game 4 - MR Krause 23, LHS Weaver 3, RHS Abe 16, SU Song 25

I guess I can understand Song being rested after throwing 25 pitches the previous game. But RHS Abe should have been available. MR Werner was for sure available. Even MR Krause should have been available with his rubber arm (16 EN). LR was tired. Still seems strange.

This brings me to another question. Can MR ever come in in a tie game or with a slim lead in the 7th or 8th inning? Or does the computer view MR as 5th and 6th innings only? Does that make sense? Also, I noticed that least season my closer would only ever come in in save situations, even after changing "smallest RD" to zero (usually I keep those settings set to the triangle default). My closer is definitely my best bullpen arm so it bugs me that he never comes in in tie games in the late innings. He's basically useless if I'm the home team and we go into extras. How can I fix this and make it more realistic? Do those triangle default settings have anything to do with this?

Any further explanation on the smallest and largest RD settings would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you can see the fatigue of your pitchers in the box score.

The setup men will always take priority over the MR if their "first inning" allows them to come in (except for a blow out). The MRs and LRs are always a viable option in any situation, so you want to make sure you have at least three of those guys set (with no RD setting).

The manual goes into detail about each of the settings and the logic the game uses when selecting which pitcher to bring in.

I'd leave the RD settings alone. If you have something going on there, that could cause problems. I have mine set to the default, except for my closer. A pitcher will ONLY be allowed to come into the game if the RD is between the RDs you listed. Its a good way to get stuck with no valid relievers.

Its weird, because it looks kind of like your LHS and RHS are acting in reverse. Its most likely something else happening though. Could be your RD or first inning setting, or even your fatigue limit setting if you have it set too high.
