Julio Dimas: He's 32 this year. He's already committed nine errors in 20 games. He allowed 12 last season and 11 the season before, though he had error spikes the two years before.

Andy Combs: He's 31 this year. He's already committed four errors in 21 games. He allowed 13 last season and nine the season before.

How do I tell if I'm seeing signs of age-related decline or just really horrible luck?

Neither of them lost a point in defensive abilities this season, so I'd blame the errors on small sample size. They should be back at their normal fielding % after 160 games.

It may be small sample size... but Dimas just committed hist tenth error. I'm trying, but it's difficult for me to look at it as statistical noise; Dimas is costing me games at this point.

Few possibilities:

#1 - Small sample sizes, so don't panic

#2 - Any ballpark changes? Maybe more opponents playing on grass or without domes than previous years?

#3 - Only whole numbers are shown on the players screen, so yes, it is common for skills to decrease for older players without seeing a decrease on the scouting report. However, fielding is usually one of the last skills to drop and it is unlikely you would be seeing a drastic effect from any small drop that would have occurred.

#4 - sometimes players just have inexplicable down years.

My division had one turf team, Round Rock, that had been around for a couple of seasons, move out. Seems foolish to put too much weight into the effect one turf team had on overall team defense the past two seasons, but I could be wrong.

Guess I'll stick with being patient for the time being (Admittedly my pitching is probably losing me games more than Dimas and Combs. Ugh, my pitching...)
