I know skills can get capped if a player spends too much time in the minors, but can they always learn a defensive position with time in minors?

That is a great question.

Steve has told us that a players' "Position to Play in the Minors" setting is more important than actual playing time for learning positions. However old guys don't get any playing time and aren't really supposed to get any training past a certain age (26?, 27? 28?, who knows).

Has anyone actually tried an experiment to see if an old player (30+) can gain position experience in the minors?

Also worth noting there could be a difference between an old guy who is underdeveloped vs. an old guy who is fully developed.

My guy Nava gained a lower case ss despite being too old to play in minor league games. Hoping he'll get at least halfway to uppercase SS by the end of this season. http://brokenbat.org/player/122579

ETA - asked a similar question last year, if anything there is helpful to you: http://brokenbat.org/forum/0/2/5313

Yes, they can improve positions in the minors.
It is useful when an UPPER CASE designation turns into lower case, you can get back by sending him down
