Is there any general consensus on a "break-even point" of a high fielding out-of-position player vs a lower fielding but experience defender? I'm thinking more for infielders, but could apply for anyone.

For example what would be better for a backup 3B:
-18 fielding / 15 range (no experience at 3B)
-12 fielding / 13 range (lowercase 3b)

if both players were equal then play the 18 fielding - if one is younger and likely to be on your team for a longer then they'd take precedence regardless.

Assuming they have similar arms, I would play the 13 over the 18. I try to stay away from the out of position penalty because its unclear which aspects of the game in impacts. I'm pretty sure it effects more than just fielding percentage.

That said, the 18 will likely be the better 3B in the future if you can put up with the pain of training him. Mostly depends on all the other factors not listed (arm strength, hitting ability, etc.)
