TLDR - In the long term, I believe your read on Burton is correct. Not much to offer. In the short term, his arm behind the plate could be important. Especially in a backup role.

Considering his only value is as a defensive specialist, poor position knowledge further kneecaps him.

Roster spots have value. Investing more time in this guy with the best possible outcome being a backup catcher is poor return.

I appreciate that it's tough cutting good potential bars. I've tried to cut Stahl every day for a week, and he's still there.

So I agree with Blackbeard's instincts. This guy is an easy cut. If you think you need a catcher prospect, there are better options in waivers / free agency. 12 potential guys can handle that position just fine. Otherwise, find a 12 pot pitcher 20-23 that you think might have some magic and give him a whirl. It's much easier to fill a position player opening through waivers than to add quality pitching depth.

Thank you all very much for the opinions and advice. Very much appreciated.

The team was pretty lean when I acquired it. I cut some of the older guys that didn't seem to have many viable skills. Then I cut some of the prospects that didn't seem to be very prosperous as in they had less than a 12 pot with seemingly no skills either in hitting or fielding.

My thoughts about real life base ball and I think it holds true here is that if the guy can hit the ball and get on base and he stinks in the field then there can always be a place for him at DH or 1B. I have a few guys like that on the team and want to first go for a hitting team and build fielding and especially pitching as I go along.

I have been quite active in the free agent market along with Waivers. I freed up 4 open slots and am carrying 46 players with the hopes that I can land a good waiver guy. I understand that getting a guy off waivers is not easy when there are 96 managers that have him on their waiver list.

I played a similar text manager game called Hockey Arena and was in it for near 6 years and went to the top! Their free agent system worked differently because if there was a player you wanted you had to be online bidding and updating the page at the exact time the free agency ended. Not much fun. I like the waiver system here, its more like a lottery and if you go for the lesser waiver players you have a better chance.

I have waiver claims on 10 or 12 guys. maybe I'll get lucky and get one. If not I'll keep looking. I like this game because its not easy and that makes it be a challenge.

I have read the forum a lot and read the manual which has helped. I also signed a couple free agent pitchers that had very low control at 5 or 6. Got rid of them after they put up a bunch of walks and wild pitches. I'm now focusing more on control.

Thanks again for all the help and opinions. I think I will hang on to him for a while because he does have the good arm and he's young. Plus my new manager has 16 in fielding dev. and 15 in player dev. so maybe that will give him a boost. The negative is that he stinks at pitcher dev. which is at 4. But since I want to be a hitting team first, he is good at managing hitters at 16 which seems to be pretty good.

Cheers.

I played Hockey Arena for a while too. Like Freddy, I was in the Canadian pyramid. It was so long ago. I'm not even sure what my team name was ... think it was Valiant?

Like so many other sports management games I've played, it eventually fell victim to "it's just not as good as BrokenBat".

I was in the American divisions. My teams name was the Springfield Indians. A real minor league team I followed in Massachusetts. I lived in Connecticut at the time and I guess you could say I followed the teams in Boston. Now that I live in Florida I plan on moving my team to someplace in Florida (probably Tampa or Miami) and go from there.

I think what ended my Hockey Arena was the tedious effort required to get good players and prospects. Plus it wasn't as much fun as I went along. Theres more here in BB than was in HA.

I like to build things, obviously building the team which consisted of getting better players. Then I always liked building the different training, arena and other things.

Once I got to the top after 5 years or so and I had all the facilities built, all that was left was to sometimes stay up late at night trying to out bid somebody else in order to get a player.

That became tedious and coupled with my players getting old it felt like I was no longer just trying to replace old players, I needed to essentially rebuild the entire team. So I quit after being in the game for almost 6 years. Plus the regulars in div 1 weren't all that much fun any more and once you fell out of div 1 it wasn't easy to get back. lol

I realize this isn't exactly what this thread was originally about, but what do you guys think of Hattrick and Buzzerbeater?

I always found both of those games a little flat. Steve took the best of what they where and fixed a lot of the flaws when he made this game.

I was really fond of Hattrick. That said, its the only game I have ever "rage quit". I can provide details if you want (for Hattrick enthusiasts), but essentially months of work were undone by one extremely low probability event that had catastrophic consequences.

I tried to like Buzzerbeater. I was put off by their drafting system. IIRC that was the game where you purposefully drafted baddies for a while building up points to where you could select something good. Again IIRC, that's also one of those games where great player get massive salaries and are thus readily available. I seem to think I got nuked a couple of times by teams that had clearly unsustainable rosters. (Could be wrong on that, was a while ago).

Bidding against other owners for players. Shudder.
