Broken Bat Baseball
Is Broken Bat a truly well designed, accurate, computer simulation of a sport with simulated player activity controlled by users. Outcome dependent upon user input?
Or is it a fun, well designed, baseball playing game with user input, outcome dependent on random computerized events?

Example:
__________________
Avery comes in to play defense at first base.
(xtra inning game, Avery, a rookie, with '2' fielding, has never played the position, insertion is BB game design decision, not SIM player controlled)

Coffey reaches on an error by first base Avery.
Vega hits a ground ball single through to left field. Coffey comes in to score.
__________________
Game winning run scores. Outcome of this game was determined by random computer actions rather than user input altering the outcome.

Confusing in many way's as the quality and depth of material presented for user decision making in BB is near second to none. It has the look and most times feel of a true simulation rather than a game of computerized altered events. Many have such a belief in a simulation they make comparisons of this games statistics to IRL baseball statistics. Even the games developers have called it a simulation in some listings and a game in others.

Computer Simulation defined:
The technique of representing the real world by a computer program; "a simulation should imitate the internal processes and not merely the results of the thing being simulated"

Site Quotes:
"Broken Bat is an online strategic management game and computer baseball simulation"
"The game engine is quite advanced and provides realistic baseball results and requires in depth tactical play"

Long time playing the game, never seen anything like that!
Would you mind to elaborate?
Was the 1b checked for Defensive Replacement?
Pinch hit for?
Pinch run for?
It's highly unusual for a hitter to be subbed for no reason

Avery has "1b", meaning he has some experience at 1B. He replaced Jimenez who has absolutely no experience at 1B as a defensive replacement. Makes sense to me; Avery is the better 1B and will make fewer errors than Jimenez. The better question is why did Jimenez come in in the first place. Avery should have been in the field from the 5th.

My guess would be the following:

- Coburn started the game, but is selected to come out after 5 innings if it is a left handed pitcher.

- Since Mead (lefty) was pitching in the 5th, the manager decided to bring Jimenez into the game for his righty batting.

- Jimenez was checked for defensive replacement.

- Since the team was ahead in the 8th, the manager decided to bring in Avery since he was the superior defensive first baseman.

So you did choose to do this without realizing it. If you didn't have Jimenez selected for defensive replacement, Avery would not have come in. Of course Jimenez probably would have made the errors instead in that case.
