Yeh, every time Dogwood goes on a slump, so do my guys....and every time we make a run, so do they. Barring some miracle, I'm going back to D6 even if I get back to .500. I know one thing, this year's effort would inspire a Jim Mora rant. Probably his last one as Saints coach, Diddly Poo.

The end is near...and my time in V.10 is coming to a close for now, barring a miracle. As the season's last few games loom, an update of the pennant races, relegation battles, and a preview of next season's newbies:

East: The Roanoke Orioles are on the cusp of clinching the East pennant and promotion, only a complete meltdown can stop them now. Their magic number is 4, which they will likely at least take a bite into against Schaumburg. As they'd long threatened to do, LaGrange has made a late run, combined with Des Plaines' slump, the Cubs have vaulted into second place for now, but will likely have to content themselves with second or third place. Meanwhile, the Schaumburg Bombers and Pontiac Lions will be heading down to LL VI next year.

West: The race between the Wahiawa Bears and Burien Beavers has been tight all season, and true enough, the two are tied at 87-63 heading into the final three series. Burien's higher run differential is the tiebreaker, however, so we shall see how the West is won soon enough. The relegation battle in the west is between North El Dorado's Octopuses, the Sparks Bengals and the Makakilo Buccaneers. The Bucs are heading down, but Sparks has a shot at swapping places with North El Dorado. Even third place Santa Cruz isn't completely safe from relegation right now.

IV.5 Relegation: In the west, the Lake Forest Dragons and New Orleans Cubs' shared fate is sealed, and at least one of the pair will be in V.10 next season. The East will be sending down the Marietta Jaguars for sure...I think. It's very likely, however, that one team with a record over .500 will be sent down, and right now the team occupying fifth place is the Utica Yankees, but there's an outside chance even the second place Reading Knights could go on the schneid and find themselves dropping.

VI.19 Promotion: The East will be sending up the Passaic Cowboys, and los vaqueros await either the Temple Chiefs or Billings Jokers, whose race is coming down to the wire, Temple a game ahead of Billings. In case of a tie, however, Billings currently holds the tiebreaker.

VI.20 Promotion: Things aren't as tightly contested as in VI.19, as the Reno Bengals and Danbury Elephants each have a magic number of 4. Yes it is...it's a magic number.

V.10 Championship: it came down to the wire, but the Burien Beavers have won the West. Only one game separated them from the Wahiawa Bears for the pennant, and now Burien faces off against the Orioles of Roanoke for the League Championship.

I Was Born A Donkey...or Relegation: While Burien and Roanoke are heading up to LL IV, Four teams are heading back down to LL VI: the Schaumburg Bombers and Pontiac Lions from the East, and the West's Sparks Bengals and Makakilo Bucs. Replacing them from D-6 are the Passaic Cowboys and Billings Jokers from VI.19 and the Reno Bengals and Danbury Elephants from VI.20.

East: As we begin August, the East race has narrowed down to the Des Plaines Elephants and Utica Yankees, with the Yanks trailing behind by five games. As for the rest of the East, the Clarksville Ninjas, Schaumburg Bombers and Dogwood Wranglers will be fighting to avoid fifth place, which comes with relegation, the spot currently occupied by Dogwood. Finally, the Pontiac Lions find themselves seated firmly in the cellar, hot helped by having the largest run differential in the league, either way.

West: At the moment, it looks like the New Orleans Rebels' division to lose. Nola sits eight games ahead of second place Ventura, though things could be dramatically different a month or two from now. The battle to escape relegation is between Pasco, Citrus Heights and Pasadena, with the Koi currently in the clear.

We're in the home stretch, with only a few weeks left, and at 92-47 with their magic number at 11, the New Orleans Rebels look like they'll win the West. Reno's had a good season, Nola's just had it better. In the East, Utica has narrowed the gap between themselves and Des Plaines to just 4 games. This ought to be a tantalizing race to watch.

In the race to escape relegation, the Pasco Polar Bears and Citrus Heights Crusaders are firmly in the red zone in the West, with fourth place Pasadena 7.5 games ahead of the Crusaders. Meanwhile, moribund Pontiac, which became the first team in V.10 to lose 100 games (Pasco has dropped 85, for comparison), is destined to fall down to LL VI, and joining them will be either Dogwood or Schaumburg, though the Bombers currently have the advantage in the standings.

On the Come-Up: VI.19 has not one, but two close division races going. In the West, Plugerville is 3.5 ahead of Temple, while Eastern leader Owasso is trying to fend off Flint, who is 2.5 back. Meanwhile, the race to watch in V.20 is between Manchester and Egg Harbor, with the Hornets a mere 3 games back. The Amarillo Wranglers, meanwhile, have begun the countdown to their division title in earnest, standing 10.5 games ahead of 2nd place North El Dorado.

Only three series to go before the championship, and the picture is gaining ever more clarity. Out in the West, New Orleans has already clinched the division title and promotion, while Pasco and Citrus Heights are being thrown back to LL VI. By contrast, in the East, 8 is the magic number in both the championship and relegation races. Des Plaines leads Utica by just 3 games in the home stretch, while 4th place Schaumburg is trying to fend off Dogwood and avoid joining Pontiac in relegation.

This is it, the regular season is almost over, and we know all but one thing. We know that the New Orleans Rebels will be promoted. We know that the Pasco Polar Bears, Citrus Heights Crusaders, Dogwood Wranglers and Pontiac Lions will be relegated. What remains a mystery, however, is who will represent the East in the championship series...will it be the current leader, the Des Plaines Elephants, or will the Utica Yankees snatch a pennant from the jaws of defeat?

In the stats races, Yukio Sano (Reno) and Cliff Summers (Clarksville) are duking it out for the batting title, with Sano leading .315 to .312. The home run race is also a tight one, with Reno's Kyle Osborne chasing Adrian Fuentes (New Orleans), who has 45 bombs to Osborne's 43. Fuentes has clinched the RBI crown, as his 124 ribbies give him an insurmountable lead with just a few games to go. Shane Smith of Utica is the current OBP leader, though Sanu is within striking distance behind him, and the man from Japan is also the runner up in the Slugging race behind Fuentes. Second in both makes Sanu first in OPS by a decent margin (.975). Finally, the steals king will be Schaumburg's Dog, George Barker (74 SB).

Angel Contreras of New Orleans will have racked up the most victories, currently 25, while teammate Brett Hart's 56 saves will make him the closer of the year. Contreras has also pitched the most innings by far (308 1/3), while the lowest ERA is currently held by Clarksville's Ariel Otera (1.80). Otera sits third in the WHIP race (0.992), watching Jim Hayes (Des Plaines, 0.981) and Roberto Naranjo (Reno, 0.936) whip and do the nae-nae ahead of him. It's a close strikeout race, however, as current leaders Rick Di Paolo (Reno) and Rick Barr (New Orleans) each have struck out 165 batters, only two ahead of Schaumburg's Enrique Carmona, with Citrus Heights' Brian Parks not too far behind with 157.

Finally, so far, Reno's Kyle Osbourne is the batter who's won the most game MVP awards, with 18, while Contreras has been named pitching MVP 16 times this season.

Bumping this league thread to see who else we got that's active these days. Completely changed this team after picking it up a few days ago...cut a lot of older guys, hired a new manager, moved to a new city, all that good stuff. Looking forward to a great season in V.10! Best of luck to all.
