It would truly put the best teams into the Classic each year. And you could re-use the same rosters from that year's Classic in these games. There's 51 nations currently represented in Broken Bat, so I figure you could try to split them up geographically: The Americas (18) Argentina, Aruba, The Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, The Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, The United States, The Virgin Islands Europe (17) Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland Africa, Asia and Oceania (16) Austalia, China, Guam, Hong Kong, Israel, Indonesia, Japan, Nigeria, New Zealand, Pakistan, The Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand All of the teams would play a one-game round robin against every team, with the home and away teams for each game switching every other year. (Example: Thailand is the away team vs. Taiwan in 2028, but Taiwan is the away team in 2029, etc.) The top six teams in each division would be guaranteed spots in the World Classic - 18 spots guaranteed - in order to promote cultural diversity and give each division a fair shot at producing Classic teams. The counterpart would be that the Americas would have the most competitive battle for the top six spots, but the idea would be the other 10 teams would still have a fair shot at earning one of the 14 remaining spots. The remaining 33 teams would be split into 11 groups of 3, with a round-robin format as well. The top 11 teams would be guaranteed spots in the World Classic, and the remaining 22 teams would be placed in a single-elimination format, with the top 2 teams earning spots in the Classic and a consolation match for the losers of the semifinals, whom would play a winner-take all game to take the final spot. TLDR: Round robins decide which of the 32 teams make the World Classic, rather than just what Steve might want for one year. With this format, it could add some interest into the end of the regular season since many teams are not going to be competing for championships. These players would not get any training or extra salary, just could be fun. It would be during the dead period after the championships. Due to the lack of parity among the teams, the best teams would almost always make it anyways. Another drawback is that this could be difficult to implement, and if that's the case, it's not a big deal. I just thought it could be a fun idea if it was easy to implement and not thought to be excessive by the community. |
