The Tigers announced they have released 31 year old Mario Battle. The left handed pitcher was a 94 SI and 11 potential. The release opened up a spot in the bullpen for 24 year old Daniel Mendez. Mendez is also a lefty but has more potential than Battle. Mendez is ranked as the Tigers number 6 prospect. He has the upside potential to be a closer or back end reliever.
The move was clearly made to get younger and develop the talent. The Tigers currently sit 11 games back of 1st place. Mario Battle was rumored to be released in the off season but as he along with the Tigers slid, his departure date moved up.
