So I drafted this guy in the first round with 14 potential. He is now dead last in my prospects ranking and I have a lot of 12 potential players ahead of him in minors.

Is he a proof of misassessing talent? I am also surprised at his lack of ABs, but with his 0 hitting, that is kind of self explanatory. Is there a way to see him get more ABs?

If the engine builds in draft busts, I think that that is great for this game. I am labeling him as a busy, because he promoted to A ball without proving anything. Sigh.

By way of contrast, the guy that I drafted in the second round might become something as his SI has already increased twice in training and he is getting ABs. Am I right to feel better about this guy's potential?

The prospect ranking system isn't so much a measure of how good the player can be so much as how likely it is the player is ready to play in the majors at age 25. It really doesn't look at the 'pot' rating at all.

For example, if you had a 19 year old 'rookie' that was potential 10 but had an SI of 60, he'd be highly rated because he'd likely train to be good enough to be in the majors at 25, even if he'd ultimately top out at 12/12/12/12.

At 18, Lockhart has almost no skills so he's going to have to train a lot to be ready by age 25. If he added 1 point / year to every skill, he'd be 7/8/9/7, which is pretty mediocre which is why is prospect ranking is low. Give him a couple of years training and see how it goes.

Also, because it is based purely on SI, defensive players are always over rated, and offensive guys are always underrated.

Really its just guys high in Speed, Range, and Arm, since those skill start off fully developed, so they have extra SI at the start.

I wouldn't stress to much over Lockhart right now. His promotion to A at 18 is really very good. Just have to cross your fingers on the SI growth. If he has decent growth he should be fine.

Thanks for the information guys. SI is king then. Good to know.

No, SI is just what the rating is based on. The rating doesn't really tell you how good the player is.

Okay, I will read the manual a bit more to try and grasp a general idea. Thanks!

A few key points when you take a look:

1) Players grow on different growth curves
2) Except in rare cases players' ratings will be capped by their scouting report
3) Build is important, not just total SI
4) POT shows a range of possible ending SI (when fully developed)

That last link has a bunch of useful links in it. Here is one additional useful link:

Drafting for Position

Also, feel free to keep asking questions about guys you aren't sure about. Most people on the boards enjoy helping out new players. You may sometimes get differing opinions on some players, but that is just more data for you to chew on :)

And the manual is definitely worth a read. All these other links I provided are best reviewed after reading the manual to get the basics down.

@Rock, btw if you don't have this thread bookmarked, you might want to. Also, for defense reference.

I know they might not be helpful until after an owner has the basics down, but they contain important info directly from Steve. My bookmark list includes all the discussions where I have seen Steve clarify parts of the game.

One last one.

No prob @lost. I forgot how relatively new you were, can't believe that discussion was a year before you joined.
